Fewer than half of Americans who identify themselves as Christians say the most important part of Christmas is the birth of Jesus, according to a Lutheran Hour Ministries study conducted by the Barna Research Group.
While 88 percent of those surveyed identified themselves as Christians, only 37 percent called the birth of Christ the most significant aspect of Christmas. “Family time” was cited as the most important aspect of the holiday by 44 percent of those surveyed.
Over three-quarters of evangelicals cited the birth of Christ as the most important aspect of Christmas, compared to 32 percent of fundamentalists and 29 percent of Catholics.
