Recently, one of the men hobbled his horses for the night during a group trail ride that we had. Some riders had never used hobbles before, and they had a lot of questions, so I decided to address them here.

Hobbles are shackles fastened to a horse’s legs that limit its motion. It functions by limiting how far a horse’s legs can spread apart. They do, though, permit the animal to roam and graze. Horse training often involves the use of hobbles.

Hobbles are practical instruments that, when used properly, are secure and don’t hurt your horse. Before you put hobbles on your animal, there are a lot of things to understand.

The Tough-1 style uses buckles to keep the binds in place; while they aren’t the quickest or easiest to put on and take off, they are the kind I feel most at ease with.

Some horse owners like restraints with tabs like the Weaver Leather, which are marketed as being easier to use than those with buckles. They appear to be skilled, though I haven’t tried them so I can’t say for sure.

You can also build hobbles out of soft cotton rope or lead rope. On horses who have been trained to use leg restraints, homemade hobbles are effective, but they are not appropriate for animals with little to no training.

Scotch hobbles

When dealing with obstinate horses, farriers typically employ Scottish hobbles. He can clip the back hooves of the horses while being restrained without risk of being kicked.

Before you tie the horse’s leg, you must work with it and desensitize it. Before applying pressure, horses need to feel at ease with a loop around their lower leg.

A rope placed around the horse’s neck is used to hold the horse’s rear foot in the air when it is restrained. The loop around the horse’s neck can be adjusted so that its foot can rest on the ground, but it should never be raised higher than six inches.

Place a 12- to an 18-foot-long rope over the horse’s neck and wrap the long end over the pastern of the back legs to perform a rear-leg hobble. The rope’s ends should be brought together and secured with a slip knot.

To build your own hobbles, use a lead rope or any soft rope. However, I advise you to only use homemade restraints on trained horses who are accustomed to wearing them.

How to mount a horse using hobbles.

Getting your horse used to have anything around their legs is the first step in teaching them to wear hobbles. You can either have your horse walk into a loop and pull steadily on the rope, releasing pressure when it responds, or you can rope its legs and give them a tug.

Once your horse has become accustomed to having a rope around its lower legs by doing this repeatedly until it understands and appears at ease, it’s time to fasten the restraints.

Hobble cuffs are placed on the front legs by standing to one side, placing one on the farthest front leg, fastening the buckle, and then the other. Get up and get out of your horse’s path.
