Secret Service agents detained the Rev. Rob Schenck after he confronted President Bill Clinton during a Christmas Eve service in Washington, D.C.
Schenck, general secretary to the 5,000-member National Clergy Council, said that while waiting to take communion at the Washington National Cathedral he leaned over the altar rail toward Clinton and said, “God will hold you to account, Mr. President.”
Schenck said he was referring to Clinton’s veto of a bill to ban partial-birth abortion, a veto that has been criticized by Billy Graham, Mother Teresa and the Pope. Schenck said the Secret Service detained and searched him after Clinton complained that Schenck had “said words” to him.
