How many charismatics and Pentecostals are there in the U.S.? It’s a difficult question, since many belong to other denominations or to independent congregations.
A recent effort to identify charismatics by their religious experience (specifically speaking in tongues and self-identification with the charismatic or Pentecostal movement) found that 7.2 percent of Americans can be considered “core” members of the “Spirit-filled” movement.
Researchers Corwin Smidt and Lyman Kellstedt found that 9 percent of Americans claim the gift of tongues and 12 percent identify in some way with the Pentecostal or charismatic movements.
