The estranged son of Madalyn Murray O’Hair is calling her bluff. The atheist leader disappeared mysteriously in 1995 along with her son Jon Garth Murray and granddaughter Robin Murray O’Hair.
On Jan. 3, 1997, William J. Murray — a Christian minister who has abandoned his mother’s teachings — filed a court petition in Austin, Texas, to become guardian of the estates of his missing family members.
Murray was the plaintiff in O’Hair’s famous lawsuit that banned government-sponsored prayer in schools, but now heads a political action committee devoted to returning prayer to classrooms. His petition estimates his brother (Jon) and daughter’s (Robin) estates at $100,000 each, and has no value estimate on his mother’s estate.
At the time the trio disappeared, the IRS was seeking $750,000 in allegedly misdirected funds from atheist groups they controlled; since then more missing funds have been discovered.
