The new speaker of the state Assembly is Antonio Villaraigosa. He is pro-abortion, pro-homosexual and belongs to the American Civil Liberties Union and is considered one of the most liberal members of the Assembly. It really doesn’t speak much for those people who voted for him. But then, maybe they believe “Character doesn’t count.” Could they be the same crowd that used to say, “Better Red than Dead?”

SB 869 gives homosexuals special status under the law. If this is passed, it would force churches to employ homosexuals. This is a violation of the religious beliefs of Christians, Jews and Muslims. It is also a violation of religious freedom. Textbooks and indoctrination of students to accept their lifestyle will be implemented, which is contrary to the beliefs of the majority of parents sending their children to public school. Write to Senators Boxer and Feinstein and urge them to vote against this bill.

The Freedom From Religious Persecution Monitoring Act of 1997 H.R. 2431, although sounding good, is a bad law. Unfortunately, some Christian leaders are supporting it, but in careful examination, it will cause more harm than good. This law would establish an Office of Religious Persecution Monitoring to provide for the imposition of sanctions against countries engaged in a pattern of religious persecution and for “other purposes.” This “other purposes” leaves much in question: Article 18 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and Article 18 of the Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and numerous international agreements. Write to your Congressman and Senators Boxer and Feinstein and tell them to oppose this very bad and dangerous law.

President Clinton has nominated James Hormel to be U.S. Ambassador to Luxembourg, which is 97% Catholic. Hormel is a homosexual who openly supports and finances homosexual causes and intends to introduce his lover at diplomatic functions. He also proudly supports “Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence,” a homosexual organization which mocks the church, priests and nuns with their drag-queen style dress and makeup. One country has already rejected receiving him as ambassador.
Write to Senators Boxer and Feinstein to vote against his nomination as this, too, is in violation of Religious Beliefs and could constitute a Hate Crime.
Beverly Wyer of El Cajon is a Christian political activist.
