Good Samaritan recipient gives of her time freely

Just as Jesus is a free gift to us, the willingness of Frances Winford to serve has been a gift to New Creation Church.

Winford has learned how to give freely of herself for the work of the ministry at New Creation Church in San Diego, where she has attended for 13 years.

When asked to describe a quality about Frances or why she should be selected, the person who nominated her, Frederica Flynt, said, ³She is a free spirited woman who is very knowledgeable of the Word of God and she gives freely of her time without expecting anything in return.²

Winford has served with Willing Workers Auxiliary. She handles the preparation of the communion trays for Sunday service, volunteers to take care of people getting water baptisms, and visits the shut-ins at home and the sick in the hospital. If it¹s your birthday, you have a new birth in the family or an anniversary, Winford is sure to send a card to let you know you are being thought of on your special day.

³She¹s a delightful person and there isn¹t anything you can ask her that she wouldn¹t do. Whatever need arises, she¹ll do. She never expects anything in return,² said Flynt.

Frances, 6o years old, is married to her husband Gene D. Winford for 29 years. She works at Chavez Elementary School. They reside in San Diego.

Both Winford and Flynt will receive four tickets to the House of Blues Sunday Brunch in downtown San Diego — Winford as the Good Samaritan recipient and Flynt as the person who nominated her.

Nominations are being accepted through May 10 for next month¹s ³Good Samaritan Award.²

The award was established to recognize people in the community who are ³Good Samaritans² — people who help the homeless, are mentors, or are giving in other areas.

People will be recognized monthly through November. The rules are easy. Submit your nomination by the 10th of the month for it to be considered in the next edition. Include your name, address and phone number, as well details about the person you¹re nominating.

Judges — the staff of Good News, Etc. — will consider both a special one-time act of kindness and continued service.

One entry per person per month is allow. Nominations should be of people doing volunteer work and not being paid for their duties. Please submit entries by e-mail to [email protected] or by mail to ³Good Samaritan Award,² c/o Good News, Etc., P.O. Box 2660, Vista, CA 92085.

Winners agree to have their photo taken for publication in Good News, Etc. and to be recognized by the House of Blues.
