Economist Professor Nurul Islam’s burial completed

The burial of the Deputy Chairman of the First Planning Commission of Bangladesh and veteran economist Professor Nurul Islam has been completed in the United States. His funeral and burial took place in Washington on Wednesday local time.

Family members, friends and well-wishers attended Professor Nurul Islam’s funeral at the Islamic Community Center Mosque in River Road, Maryland. He was later buried in the George Washington Cemetery.

The country’s professor Nurul Islam (94) died last Monday around 12:00 am local time in Washington. He was suffering from heart disease.

Professor Nurul Islam served as Emeritus Fellow of International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) until his death. In 1987, he joined the organization as Senior Policy Adviser to the Director General.

Economist Nurul Islam’s name is closely associated with the establishment of Bangladesh. Before independence, he played an important role in the formulation of the six points and the 1970 election manifesto. He was one of Bangabandhu’s mentors. Professor Nurul Islam led the country’s first planning commission after independence.

During his long career, Professor Nurul Islam served as Assistant Director-General of the Economic and Social Policy Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). Apart from this, he was the first chairman of today’s Bangladesh Institute of Development Research (BIDS). He has also taught in the Economics Department of Dhaka University. He has served as visiting academic in various reputed universities of the world.
