America has a “unique moral obligation to speak out” against religious persecution overseas, Sen. Sam Brownback (R-Kan.) told the Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee on the Near East and South Asia June 10. Since so many of the nation’s founders came to America in search of religious freedom, America should now be a champion of that freedom around the globe, Brownback said.
Witnesses appearing before the committee detailed religious persecution around the world, including torture and murder. One Pakistani Christian hid his identity behind a screen to protect his family from retaliation for his testimony about fire attacks on a Christian neighborhood.
