The American Medical Association (AMA) House of Delegates, meeting in late June in Chicago, affirmed its support of a bill pending in Congress that would ban partial-birth abortions.
Partial-birth abortion is a procedure performed late in the pregnancy. The unborn child is partially delivered feet-first through the birth canal. While the child’s head is still inside the mother, the abortionist stabs the child in the skull with a pair of scissors, suctions out its brains, and collapses the skull before completing delivery.
The bill pending in Congress would criminalize the procedure, and would also permit civil action against the abortionist in some situations.
Supporters of partial-birth abortion insist that they are sometimes necessary to protect the health or life of the mother.
